Oh my sweet boy.
I hope you know how much I love you. I think you do, just based on your smiles when you see my face. I think your smiles are easily the best things I see every day.
I am writing you this letter because today, as part of the blog challenge I’m doing, I am supposed to give a newborn a piece of advice. Since you’re my favorite newborn, I thought I’d give you some advice.
Ezra, sometimes I look at this world and think: what have we done, bringing this sweet baby into this broken place? It seems like every day people find new ways to hurt one another. But I can’t stay on that train of thought forever because, the truth is, you are the best part of my world (and your daddy’s too!) and even though things are broken, it doesn’t mean things are hopeless.
So my advice to you, baby boy, is to never lose hope. The hard truth is that bad things happen, people will disappoint and hurt you, and not everything will go according to plan. But you can’t give up. Giving up is exactly what the world would expect you to do, but I know you will be better and stronger than that.
I know you will be that way because I can already tell a bit of your spirit in just these three and a half short months that I’ve known you. You are resilient, confident and fearless. You are strong and tough, but also sweet and tender. You are just a baby, but I see glimpses of the boy and man you will become.
And that’s my second piece of advice – don’t ever lose yourself. Right now, you don’t know any other way to be other than who you are. But over time, people will try to tell you otherwise. I’m telling you now, and I will tell you every day until my last breath, that you just perfect the way you are. You don’t need to change a thing.
These two things – hope and confidence – will carry you through life. It won’t always be easy, but if you build a strong foundation out of those two things, you will make it. I know it.
I love you, baby boy.
Love,
Your mama
